Introductory Critique given by Gilbert Carpenter for James Gilman’s Recollections of Mary Baker Eddy , Illustrator of Christ and Christmas.
When Christ and Christmas was published in 1893, the illustrated poem was criticized. James Gilman was a self-taught artist whom Mary Baker Eddy chose as her illustrator. Mrs. Eddy placed great importance on this book. And today it must be reexamined. But before one studies the poem, this introduction to the book is recommended.
In his early 20's, Gilbert Carpenter was a student and dedicated, loyal worker at Mary Baker Eddy's home in Pleasant View for 12 months. He noticed throughout the subsequent forty years, as workers left her home, many rumors circulated in the field about life at Pleasant View under the watchful guidance of Mary Baker Eddy.
Carpenter dedicated his life to writing about his experience in her home to dispel the rumors and provide a spiritual viewpoint from which to understand the life of Mary Baker Eddy.
His writings are priceless treasures.
